Why Be Part of This Day?

  • Receive God’s full blessing in your marriage.
  • Celebrate your vows before family, community, and the Church.
  • Enjoy a joyful reception and memories to last a lifetime.

Why get married in the Church?

Marrying in the Catholic Church means entering into a valid Catholic marriage, receiving the grace of the Sacrament of Matrimony (when both spouses are baptized), and welcoming God’s blessing into your life together. It unites you more deeply with the Church and strengthens your marriage, your family, and your journey of faith.

What is Convalidation?

Convalidation is the process by which the Catholic Church recognizes a marriage as valid when a Catholic has married outside the Church without the proper permission or dispensation.

Through convalidation, couples (a man and a woman) give their consent before the Church’s minister and witnesses so their marriage becomes a valid Catholic marriage and, if both spouses are baptized, a sacrament.

Note: Not every civil marriage is invalid. Some couples may already have a valid marriage if the proper permissions or dispensations were given, or if both spouses were non-Catholic at the time of the wedding. The priest or deacon will help each couple discern their situation.

Why Now?

Many Catholic couples are civilly married but have not yet celebrated their marriage in the Church, often because of life’s challenges, financial limitations, immigration concerns or simply not knowing where to begin.

This is your opportunity to take that step now, without the pressure of planning a big wedding. The diocese will accompany you through a simple, beautiful preparation process that leads to a valid Catholic marriage, and if applicable, the Sacrament of Matrimony, a grace that strengthens your love, your family, and your relationship with God.
