Our Pastoral Plan: The Spirit Is Moving
“The 50th Jubilee of the Diocese of San José in 2031 joyfully coincides with the 500th anniversary of Our Lady of Guadalupe’s appearance and message to St. Juan Diego.” — Bishop Oscar Cantú
Two years ago, we set out on a journey of spiritual renewal — guided by the Holy Spirit, rooted in prayer, and shaped by thousands of voices across Santa Clara County. Our pastoral plan is not a document on a shelf. It is a living commitment to transformation: personal, parochial, and diocesan. And the Spirit is moving.
Two Years of Renewal: What God Is Doing Among Us
Since Bishop Cantú promulgated the pastoral plan on the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, December 12, 2023, the call to spiritual renewal has spread across our diocese. The first milestone was the creation of the Office of Pastoral Planning and Implementation, which organized the plan’s six priorities and 22 objectives into a phased, intentional approach — allowing our chancery and parishes to focus on what matters most, one step at a time.
“To live is to change, and to be perfect is to have changed often.” — St. John Henry Newman”
Our Young Church Speaks: The Youth Assembly

Our youth were not left out. Following the same listening process, thousands of young people in grades 6–12 shared their opinions, hopes, and dreams through surveys and listening sessions. In March 2025, delegates gathered at Saint Francis High
School for a day where young voices were heard, praise music filled the halls, and Jesus was adored in the Blessed Sacrament. A task force of youth ministers, campus ministers, priests, educators, and parents was formed to develop the Youth Addendum to the pastoral plan.

Young Adult Voices: The Young Adult Assembly

After months of surveying and listening, over 210 young adult delegates convened at Archbishop Mitty High School for a day of prayer, dialogue, and hope. Delegates responded to questions that needed their unique perspective, and a task force was formed to gather their input. In January 2025, the task force presented the Young Adult Addendum to the pastoral plan at a celebration featuring tacos, appreciation, and inspiring words from Bishop Cantú.

Welcoming the Stranger: The Hospitality Summit

In May 2024, over 200 parishioners from 30 parishes gathered for the Hospitality Summit — a day of inspiration, training, and prayer focused on the Sunday Mass experience. Participants explored what newcomers see, think, and feel when they walk through our doors, and left equipped to be better ministers of welcome. It was the first of several landmark diocesan gatherings.
Encuentro: Uniting Our Hispanic Community

In January 2025, the 26 parishes with Spanish-speaking ministries or Masses gathered for a joyful Encuentro. This assembly brought alignment between the USCCB’s National Pastoral Plan for Hispanic/Latino Ministry and our diocesan pastoral plan. A prominent USCCB staff member affirmed the rightful place of Hispanic leadership in parish life and the vibrancy it brings to our communities.

Empowering Our Leaders: Parish Leadership Teams

Beginning in March 2025, Parish Leadership Team (PLT) gatherings have united lay staff and volunteers as co-responsible partners in implementing the pastoral plan at the parish level. In 2025, three gatherings were held with over 400 members attending each session and a 96% parish attendance rate. PLT members have been instrumental in assessing parishioner needs, identifying parish focus areas, and rallying their communities behind the discerned work of renewal.

Strengthening the Domestic Church: Marriage & Family Ministry Training

In August 2025, over 100 English and Spanish-speaking ministers were trained in the first Institute for Leadership in Ministry (ILM) short course for Marriage & Family Ministry. Over the course of a month, this cohort studied the anthropology, theology, pastoral care, and practical strategy needed to build family ministry at the parish level, with insights from Santa Clara University professors and other professionals.
Sowing Seeds of Faith: A Campaign for Renewal

To fund the spiritual renewal efforts outlined in the pastoral plan, a feasibility study confirmed that the soil was fertile for growth. In August 2025, four pilot parishes launched the Sowing Seeds of Faith campaign to great success with their pledges exceeding their combined goal and still growing. The campaign has now expanded into Wave 1, with additional parishes joining the effort.

Guided by Many Gifts: Advisory Committees
In September 2024, seven Advisory Committees were launched to support, monitor, and advise chancery teams on implementing the plan’s priorities and objectives. These diverse committees — composed of laity, priests, and deacons passionate about their ministerial fields — have provided specific guidance to ensure that diocesan resources make a real difference at the parish level.

HOW YOU CAN PARTICIPATE
The pastoral plan belongs to all of us. Here’s how you can be part of the renewal:
SPREAD THE WORD – GET INVOLVED!
Worship – Invite someone new to join you at Mass this Sunday. Volunteer as a liturgical minister or greeter at your parish.
Formation – Commit to 10 minutes of daily prayer. Join a small faith-sharing group or Bible study at your parish.
Outreach – Reach out to someone who hasn’t been to Mass in a while. Let them know they are missed, listen to their story, and invite them back.
Family – Read Scripture together at home. Ask your parish about marriage and family ministry resources and programs.
Youth and Young Adults – Be curious about our young people: ask them questions, listen to their experiences, and support youth and young adult ministry at your parish.
Structural Renewal – Support the Sowing Seeds of Faith campaign. Join your Parish Leadership Team. Participate in the Annual Diocesan Appeal.
Looking Ahead: 2026 and Beyond
“Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect.” — Romans 12:1–2”
The Spirit is not finished with us yet. As we enter the third year of our pastoral plan, new opportunities for renewal, formation, and growth are on the horizon. Stay connected with your parish and the diocese for announcements about upcoming gatherings, training opportunities, and ways to deepen your participation in the life of our local church.
