What happens at the Solemn Vespers?

Vespers is the Church’s Evening Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours. Together we sing psalms and the Magnificat, hear Scripture, offer intercessions, and receive a blessing. On the eve of an ordination, Solemn Vespers is a beautiful, quiet way for the whole community—family, friends, clergy, religious, and faithful—to pray with and for the bishop-elect.

What happens at the Ordination Mass?

The Ordination of a Bishop unfolds within Mass through ancient and moving moments, including: Presentation of the bishop-elect and reading of the Apostolic Mandate; Promise of the bishop-elect; Litany of the Saints (bishop-elect in prayer); Laying on of hands by the principal consecrator and bishops; Prayer of Ordination; Anointing of the new bishop’s head with sacred chrism; Investiture with ring, miter, and crosier (signs of pastoral office); Greeting of fraternal peace; and the new bishop taking his place in the assembly.
