A Novena to End the Death Penalty

October 1

Rooted in the spirit of this special Jubilee Year, we are invited to consider how we are called to be “Tangible Signs of Hope” in our hurting world so desperately in need.

Nothing makes that reality more poignant than this current moment we find ourselves in today with a devastating set of executions on the horizon. Tonight (9/30), Florida plans to take the life of Victor Jones — the 13th execution in the state this year alone. Throughout October, the U.S. Catholic Church celebrates Respect Life Month, during which an additional eight men face state-sanctioned death. These are the moments when our hope is needed most and truly put to the test.

But our hope is not blind faith or wishful thinking. It must be grounded in prayer and advocacy.

I hope you’ll join in praying a Novena to End the Death Penalty October 1-9,  kicking off Respect Life Month and leading up to the World Day Against the Death Penalty, celebrated on October 10.

We also invite you to explore this comprehensive Respect Life Month Toolkit, a digital resource to support your efforts this month, or to share with your parish, ministry, community, or school.
