Bishop McGrath’s Remark on Archbishop Mitty’s 17 Minute Walkout

From Bishop McGrath on the occasion of the
17-Minute Walkout to Commemorate the Killings In Parkland, FL.
Archbishop Mitty High School

March 14, 2018

I must begin my brief words by thanking you for this observance and for inviting me to be part of it.
There is absolutely no place I would rather be than to stand here in solidarity with you as you stand in solidarity with young people across our nation, and perhaps around the world.

The tragedy at Parkland is not even the latest of far too many shooting tragedies, for last Friday, we lost one of San Jose’s own, Saint Francis High School graduate, Dr. Jennifer Gonzales, and her unborn child, who were among the four gunned down in Yountville.

But today, your voices are being heard as never before. Your calls for sanity reverberate throughout the halls of power. Today, your outrage is shared by others, and you are our teachers.

Prayer, of course is good.
Likewise, Education is good.
And Solidarity, too, is good.
But we need to act.
To demand change.
To protect the lives of innocents.

Contrary to some, the answer is not more guns, not arming teachers with Oozies or AK-47s.
My generation and your parents’ and grandparents’ has failed. You may be the last chance for real change. You have something to say, and you must.

Some of you will vote in June and November. The rest of you must do the same when your time comes. Politicians live and die by elections. You can be the change that guarantees a chance for life for many.
Swords, guns and all weapons need to be turned into proverbial plowshares. But before this can happen,

Hearts must first be converted…
To peace, to justice, to care for one another,
Each and all as sisters and brothers,
Dedicated to the common good,
Sharing the common humanity,
Even if not a common faith.

And let us heed the words of the prophet Isaiah who foretold that when peace comes, it will be a child who leads all the rest of us.

May God bless you for what you do today and for all that you will do in the tomorrows yet to come.

2018 Easter Triduum Schedule

Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. For they did not yet understand the scripture that he had to rise from the dead. John 20:8-9

The Time To Act Is Now: Call-In For A Solution for Dreamers

The Catholic Bishops of California fervently appeal to each of you, as the elected Senators and Representatives of our California Congressional delegation:  Please step up now to protect the “Dreamers,” our young sisters and brothers from deportation.  Provide them a path to citizenship.  Maintain existing protections for families and unaccompanied minors.

On Monday February 26th we are asking our 12 million Catholic voters from across the state to join in a “National Call-In Day” urging you to find a bipartisan solution for the “Dreamers” and for our country.  Please listen to these voices of reason this coming week.  Heed the voices of the Dreamers with or without DACA status – students, workers, teachers, soldiers, moms and dads – who were brought here unauthorized and without their consent.  They are valuable members of our neighborhoods, our workplaces, and our families.  They are part of the rich social fabric of America.   They have been educated in our schools and are fluent in our language and culture.   They contribute to the common good and should be part of our common future as a nation.

We, along with the majority of Californians, daily watch the pitiful partisan drama unfold, demeaning our public discourse and dismissive of the greater good.   The time for responsible and intelligent immigration reform is now.  Work with each other to solve the dilemma of the “Dreamers.”  Addressing their situation is the immediate first step in a quality national conversation on immigration reform that will take time and require focus. It would be unconscionable to hold young people hostage for political mid-term electoral advantage. Demonstrate good sense and a sound conscience by standing in solidarity with the Dreamers.

The majority of voters, Republican and Democrats alike, want the “Dreamers” situation resolved.  It is time to move beyond partisan agendas.  There is no mutually agreeable perfect solution, but there is common ground for a good solution.

Thank you for your work on behalf of the people of California, including the 700,000 plus California “Dreamers.”  Know that we are praying for you.

Respectfully,

The Public Policy Committee of the California Conference of Catholic Bishops

Temporary Liturgical Adaptations during the 2017/2018 Flu/Cold Season

The Public Health Officer of Santa Clara County has again requested that we make a number of temporary adaptations to our celebrations of the Eucharist, so as to foster the health of our worshipping communities and also of the wider community.  Given the anticipated increase of the flu throughout the Diocese in upcoming weeks, I ask that these adaptations be implemented by next weekend, December 2/3.

  1. For the duration of the flu/cold/virus season, Holy Communion will not be shared under the form of Consecrated Wine. Concelebrating priests and assisting deacons are to receive the Precious Blood by means of intinction.  Provision should be made for those parishioners who rely upon receiving Holy Communion under the Sacred Species of consecrated wine because of Celiac Disease or other conditions that do not tolerate the ingestion of a consecrated host.
  2. For the duration of the flu/cold/virus season, Holy Communion will be distributed only into the hands of communicants; during this time, Holy Communion will not be distributed on the tongue. Should a communicant be unwilling to follow this directive, that person is to receive Holy Communion after everyone else has done so.
  3. For the duration of the flu/cold/virus season, people should refrain from holding hands during the recitation or singing of the Lord’s Prayer.
  4. For the duration of the flu/cold/virus season, the Sign of Peace should be adapted so as to allow for a greeting that does not require shaking hands or touching.
  5. For the duration of the flu/cold/virus season, all who administer Holy Communion are to wash their hands with an alcohol-based anti-bacterial solution, such as Purell, before and after they administer the Sacrament. This precaution also extends to those who minister to the homebound.
  6. These adaptations are to remain in effect throughout the Diocese until conditions allow me to rescind them.

When you explain these adapted procedures to your people, please remind them that the obligation to participate in Sunday Mass does not hold for those who are seriously ill, and that it would be a mark of Christian charity for anyone who has fever, cough or other such symptoms to remain at home.  Please refer to the article, “Liturgy, Cold, and the Flu: Common Sense Practices,” which has previously been circulated throughout the Diocese.

Thank you for your immediate attention to these matters and for undertaking the catechesis that will be necessary to introduce these adaptations to your parishes and other communities by the weekend of December 2/3, our celebration of the First Sunday of Advent.
