Holy Week 2018
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
This Holy Week finds the Church once more with the Lord – entering Jerusalem, in the Upper Room, at Gethsemane, along the Way of the Cross, at Calvary and, very early in the morning, at the empty tomb.
We are invited these days to make the Lord’s journey our own, to be with Him and the disciples all along His way. Looking to them, upon whom Jesus established the Church, we see in the Twelve a ragtag group who would not be too different from us. As close as they were to Jesus, the disciples did not understand what was happening or the import of those events.
As He washed their feet and shared with them the bread and wine that was His Body and Blood, they could not yet grasp the work that God was accomplishing in their midst. As they fled from his side, fearful of those who had arrested and tortured the Lord, little did they understand. The Cross seemed to them to be the ultimate defeat of the One they had hoped was the Messiah.
Even in sight of the empty tomb and His appearance in the garden, the Upper Room and along the road to Emmaus, the disciples were, as Jesus declared, “foolish” and “slow of heart to believe.” Yet these were the very same architects of the faith that has been handed down to us from generation to generation.
They came to believe and to understand not only the events that occurred, but also the Lord’s words. And we are recipients of that same faith and the Christian life that continues to be inspired by the mystery of the Resurrection. We know that Christ died and that He rose from the dead, never more to die.
The Lord Jesus invites us this Holy Week to enter into the mystery of His Dying and Rising, as taught by Saint Paul to Timothy: “This saying is trustworthy: If we have died with him, we shall also live with him (2 Timothy 2:11).
Easter for us, then, is filled with a hope that cannot be diminished, no matter the injustices that many still experience, the lack of love, compassion and mercy in our world, still manifested in poverty, violence, war, terrorism and even the death of the innocent. Yet in the face of all of the tragedies that beset humanity in this Twenty-First Century and all of the personal defeats that we have experienced, we know, by our faith, that Christ has vanquished sin and death and shares with us newness of life.
My prayer for you this week is that each of us may be the radiant face of Christ, for He has promised that he will always be with us, to give us hope and to call each of us to rise with Him.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas,
Está Semana Santa, se encuentra la Iglesia una vez más con el Señor, entrando en Jerusalén, en el Cenáculo, en Getsemaní, a lo largo del Camino de la Cruz, en el Calvario y, muy temprano en la mañana, en la tumba vacía.
En estos días estamos invitados a hacer nuestro el viaje del Señor, a estar con Él y los discípulos a lo largo de su camino. Mirando a ellos, sobre quienes Jesús estableció la Iglesia, vemos en los doce un grupo variopinto que no sería muy diferente de nosotros. Tan cerca como estaban de Jesús, los discípulos no entendían lo que estaba sucediendo o la importancia de esos eventos.
Mientras lavaba sus pies y compartía con ellos el pan y el vino que era su cuerpo y su sangre, todavía no podían comprender el trabajo que Dios estaba realizando en medio de ellos. Mientras huían de su lado, temerosos de los que habían arrestado y torturado al Señor, poco entendieron. La Cruz les pareció la última derrota del uno que ellos esperaban fuera el Mesías.
Incluso a la vista de la tumba vacía y su aparición en el jardín, en el Cenáculo y en el camino a Emaús, los discípulos eran, como Jesús declaró, “necios” y “qué lentos son sus corazones para creer”. Sin embargo, estos eran los mismos arquitectos de la fe que nos ha sido transmitida de generación en generación.
Llegaron a creer y comprender no solo los eventos que ocurrieron, sino también las palabras del Señor. Y somos receptores de esa misma fe y de la vida cristiana que continúa inspirada por el misterio de la Resurrección. Sabemos que Cristo murió y que resucitó de entre los muertos, para morir jamás.
El Señor Jesús nos invita en esta Semana Santa a entrar en el misterio de Su muerte y resurrección, como lo enseñó San Pablo a Timoteo. Esta palabra es digna de confianza. “Si hemos muerto con él, también viviremos con él” (2 Timoteo 2: 11).
La Pascua para nosotros, entonces, está llena de una esperanza que no puede ser disminuida, sin importar las injusticias que muchos aún experimentan, la falta de amor, compasión y misericordia en nuestro mundo, todavía se manifiesta en la pobreza, la violencia, la guerra, el terrorismo e incluso en la muerte de inocentes. Sin embargo, frente a todas las tragedias que aquejan a la humanidad en este siglo XXI y todas las derrotas personales que hemos experimentado, sabemos, por nuestra fe, que Cristo ha vencido al pecado y la muerte y comparte con nosotros la novedad de la vida.
Mi oración para ustedes esta semana, es, que cada uno de nosotros sea el rostro radiante de Cristo, porque ha prometido que siempre estará con nosotros, para darnos esperanza y para llamar a cada uno de nosotros a resucitar con él.

Anh chị em thân mến,
Một lần nữa, Thiên Chúa cùng với Tuần Thánh lại đến với chúng ta – khi Ngài đi vào thành Giêrusalem, khi Ngài ở trong căn phòng cùng các môn đệ ăn lễ Vượt Qua ở Ghết-sê-ma-ni, trên chặn đường Thánh Giá, trên Đồi Sọ, và vào buổi sáng tinh mơ trước ngôi mộ trống.
Chúng ta hãy mời gọi những ngày Thánh này vào cuộc đời của chúng ta để cuộc hành trình của Chúa thành của riêng ta, và để chúng ta có thể cùng đồng hành với Ngài và các môn đệ của Ngài trên con đường này. Khi nhìn lên các môn đệ, những người mà Chúa Giêsu đã thiết lập Hội Thánh của Ngài, chúng ta thấy trong Nhóm Mười Hai những tính chất nghèo nàn không quá khác gì chúng ta. Mặc dù được sống gần gũi với Chúa Giêsu như các ngài đã được sống, họ vẫn không hiểu được và nhận thấy được tầm quan trọng của những sự kiện đã xảy ra.
Khi Chúa rửa chân cho các môn đệ và chia cho các ngài bánh và rượu được hóa nên mình và máu của Ngài, họ vẫn chưa hiểu được sự việc mà Chúa đã làm trước mắt họ. Họ vẫn còn chưa hiểu khi họ lìa bỏ Chúa, khi chạy trốn vì sợ những người bắt bớ và tra tấn Chúa. Lúc đó, cây Thánh giá đại diện cho sự thất bại của người mà họ đã mong là đấng Cứu Thế.
Ngay cả khi họ đứng trước ngôi mộ trống và khi Ngài hiện ra với họ trong khu vườn, hoặc trong căn phòng ăn lễ Vựợt Qua, và cả lúc người hiện ra trên đường tới Em-mau, các môn đệ, như Chúa Giêsu đã nói, vẫn khờ dại và “lòng trí chậm tin”. Tuy thế, họ là những kiến trúc sư của nền móng đức tin mà chúng ta đã nhận được từ thế hệ này sang thế hệ khác.
Các môn đồ đã tin và hiểu không những các sự kiện đã xảy ra, mà còn vào lời của Chúa. Chúng ta là những người đã nhận được đức tin đó và lối sống Kitô hữu vẫn được tiếp tục soi dẫn bởi mầu nhiệm Phục Sinh. Chúng ta biết là Đức Kitô đã chết và Ngài đã trỗi dậy từ cõi chết và sẽ không bao giờ chết nữa.
Chúa Giêsu mời gọi chúng ta trong tuần thánh này nghiệm ngẫm mầu nhiệm Chúa chịu chết và Chúa phục sinh, như thánh Phaolô đã viết cho tín hữu Ti-mô-thê-ô: “Đây là lời đáng tin cậy: Nếu ta cùng chết với Người, ta sẽ cùng sống với Người” (2 Ti-mô-thê-ô 2:11).
Vì vậy, Mùa Phục Sinh đối với chúng ta tràn đầy niềm hy vọng không thể dập tắt được, mặc dù phải đối mặt với sự bất công muôn người phải trải nghiệm, sự thiếu thốn của tình yêu thương, và sự thiếu thốn của lòng trắc ẩn và khoan dung vẫn đang còn hiện diện ở những nơi nghèo khổ, bạo lực, chiến tranh, khủng bố và những người vô tội vẫn bị chết oan. Tuy đối mặt với những thảm kịch vây quanh nhân loại trong thế kỷ Hai mươi mốt này và những thất bại của riêng mình, chúng ta tin là Đức Kitô đã chiến thắng tội lỗi và sự chết, và Ngài chia sẻ với chúng ta sự sống mới.
Lời cầu nguyện của tôi dành cho tất cả trong tuần này là mỗi người chúng ta có thể là gương mặt rạng rỡ của Chúa Kitô, vì Ngài đã hứa là Ngài sẽ luôn ở với chúng ta, cho chúng ta hy vọng và kêu gọi mỗi người chúng ta cùng trỗi dậy với Ngài.
