SUMMARY:Theology on Tap - Silicon Valley
DESCRIPTION:We’re back for the fall series! This is an opportunity for young adults (ages 21-39) to explore issues and topics that relate to the Catholic faith in a fun and casual environment. Come before 7:10pm and the first drink is on us! \nFr. Robert Elias Barcelos\, OCD – To Live Life to the Full: Finding Our Freedom in Christ\nGrowing up\, Fr. Robert was quite ignorant of Christ and lukewarm in his Catholic faith. Come High School\, he became captivated by the “charm” of worldly allurements and entirely immersed himself in the graffiti crew and hip-hop subculture. Eventually his “religious mediocrity” began to change. The ‘party scene’ had lost its appeal and he became driven by a thirst for truth. He wanted to acquire deeper purpose and meaning in life\, but by this time\, he had become antagonistic toward Christianity\, and rejected organized religion all together. \nAs a young artist in the search for wisdom and fulfillment\, he looked to Far-Eastern spirituality and “New-Age” philosophy. Yet\, in the midst of all that he thought would bring peace and wholeness\, he experienced an inescapable emptiness\, the void inside of something still terribly missing. It was as a college student\, that Fr. Robert experienced the impact of God’s mercy and thus his zeal for mischief was\, by God’s grace\, quickly transforming into a burning desire to dedicate his whole life to the love of Christ. This major turn-around gave birth to a religious vocation as a Carmelite. He entered the monastery a few weeks after his twenty-first birthday in 1999\, made Solemn Vows on the Solemnity of the Mother of God in 2006\, and on June 13\, 2008\, just shy of turning thirty\, was ordained as a Priest of our Lord Jesus Christ. \nClick here to download a flyer.

\nErnest Pierucci\, Esq. – Capitalism and Catholicism: Enemies or Allies?\nIn recent months\, there has been a media frenzy over Pope Francis’ alleged denunciation of capitalism. Some have even claimed that the Pope has endorsed communism. But what is the official Catholic teaching on the human person in relation to the free market? Moreover\, has Pope Francis broken from his predecessors on this subject? TOTSV is pleased to welcome a renowned expert on Catholic social teaching who will clear the muddied waters and lead us in a discussion considering questions that face the average working Catholic. After a hard day’s work\, do you sometime feel like you’re just a cog in a de-humanizing corporate machine? Catholic social teaching offers a more optimistic view: learn how we are all called to animate the created order as lay persons through our work and how our work should in fact be an extension of Christ’s work – in service to God and neighbor. \nErnest Pierucci is a magna cum laude graduate of the St. Mary’s College Integral program with a Juris Doctor degree from Catholic University of America. He has participated in over 15 international conferences on Catholic Social Teaching and is a former member of the Board of Visitors of Columbus School of Law\, The Catholic University of America. He has been happily married to Adrienne for 42 years; they have two sons and five grandchildren. \nClick here to download a flyer.
