What are the causes\, and what can be done?\nIn this talk\, William Sundstrom will start by taking a step back from the U.S. setting to provide some global perspective on income inequality and growth. In contrast with the case of the United States and many other developed countries\, the “global middle” has actually experienced substantial income growth since the 1980s. DESCRIPTION:Almost 35 years have passed since protests in Warren County\, NC against the siting of a toxic waste disposal facility in a predominantly African-American community trained nationwide attention on the emerging environmental justice movement.\nEven as the term of the country’s first African-American President comes to an end\, however\, the goal of environmental justice remains unfulfilled. DESCRIPTION:America was founded in part on the concept of religious freedom. Many today consider Muslims a grave threat to that founding principle. Is Islam incompatible with the free exercise of religion? Grasp the concepts\, understand the propositions\, then you be the judge.\nHamza Yusuf is president\, co-founder\, and senior faculty member at Zaytuna College\, the first Muslim liberal arts college in the United States. He is also an advisor to Stanford University’s Program in Islamic Studies and the Center for Islamic Studies at Berkeley’s Graduate Theological Union. Yusuf serves as a member of the board of advisors of George Russell’s One Nation\, a national philanthropic initiative that promotes pluralism and inclusion in America. In addition\, he serves as vice-president for the Forum for Promoting Peace in Muslim Societies\, which was founded and is currently presided over by Shaykh Abdallah bin Bayyah\, one of the top jurists and masters of Islamic sciences in the world. Most recently\, Yusuf contributed to the writing of the Marrakesh Declaration (2016) in Morocco affirming the rights of religious minorities in Muslim-majority countries\, and met with Pope Francis in Rome to discuss the implications of this declaration.\nPlease register for this free event.\n*Please note the venue for this event has changed. DESCRIPTION:To begin SCU’s conference on climate change and Pope Francis\, Cardinal Peter Turkson will celebrate a Catholic Mass in the Mission Church. \nOn November 4\, “Our Future on a Shared Planet: Silicon Valley in Conversation with the Environmental Teachings of Pope Francis” is a conference sponsored by Santa Clara University open to the campus and to the surrounding community in the Bay Area and beyond. In June\, Pope Francis released the encyclical called “Laudato Si” (“Praised Be”) on the environment and the global challenge of climate change. The document is unprecedented in the long history of Catholicism and offers a rich opportunity to create a dialogue among many actors (religious\, scientific\, economic\, business\, political\, and more) around one of the great issues of our time. DESCRIPTION:In this year’s Bannan Grant Research Report\, Barbara Burns of the Liberal Studies Department\, and Mick McCarthy and Jennifer Merritt of the Ignatian Center will discuss the collaborative research projects conducted this year as part of the Ignatian Center’s Thriving Neighbors Initiative. The Thriving Neighbors Initiative seeks to actively promote strategic ties between Santa Clara University and the Greater Washington Community of San Jose with the goal of expanding educational choice and improving pathways to prosperity. \nPoster session immediately following from 1-2pm featuring faculty\, student\, and community partner collaborative research projects. \nBarbara Burns serves as the Director of Liberal Studies at Santa Clara University.  She is a developmental psychologist who has worked in both the public and private sectors with colleagues in education\, public health\, pediatrics\, social work\, and psychiatry. \nMichael McCarthy\, S.J. began his undergraduate career at Stanford University but then entered the Jesuits and received his B.A. from Santa Clara University in 1987\, attended Oxford University to complete the 4-year M.A. in Literae Humaniores\, received a Master’s in Divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley in 1997\, and earned his Ph.D. in Theology from the University of Notre Dame in 2003. \nJennifer Merritt serves as the Director of Community-based Learning in the Ignatian Center. SUMMARY:Interreligious Dialogue and Leadership: Building Relationships as Persons
DESCRIPTION:The 20th century saw the displacement of the traditional religions in occident by new anthropocentric pagan doctrines\,   Fascism\, Nazism\, Stalinism\, being among the most conspicuous examples of them. Since the seventies of the last century\, and after the fall of those regimes\, a return to the traditional religions occurred. But it was not a return to the tradition through a renew of the religiosity of its spirit\,   but a return\, in many cases\, to their fanatic expressions. The challenge of this lecture is to enhance a deep interreligious dialogue in order to build up a different reality in which the dramatic failures of the last century will not repeat in this century and forever. \nBishop Patrick McGrath (Diocese of San Jose) and Rabbi Dana Magat (Temple Emanu-El) will serve as respondents at this event\,   reflecting on their friendship and the role of friendship within interreligious dialogue and community. \nCo-sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley\, Silicon Valley Interreligious Council\, and the Diocese of San Jose \nRabbi Abraham Skorka is rector of the Seminario Rabínico Latinoamericano in Buenos Aires\, the rabbi of the Jewish community Benei Tikva\, professor of biblical and rabbinic literature at the Seminario Rabinico Latinoamericano and honorary professor of Hebrew Law at the Universidad del Salvador\, Buenos Aires. Experienced Dharma Teacher and SCU Religious Studies Professor\, Sarita Tamayo-Moraga and Robert Scholla\, S.J.\, Bannan Faculty Fellow in the Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education\, will guide participants through a series of meditation and mindfulness practices from the Catholic (Ignatian) and Buddhist (Zen) traditions. This retreat grows out of a yearlong dialogue and interreligious retreat both facilitators participated in\, examining the intersections and distinctions among Zen Buddhist practice and Ignatian Spirituality. \n Sarita Tamayo-Moraga is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Religious Studies at Santa Clara University. Her scholarship focuses on comparative mysticism (primarily Buddhism and Catholicism)\, and the use of mindfulness in pedagogy. Her research focuses on how the spiritual practices of different religious traditions\, especially Catholicism and Buddhism\, transform suffering into peace\, joy\, and liberation. \nRobert W. SUMMARY:Pope Francis' Witness at the Margins: Dialogue and Scandal as Signs of the Times
DESCRIPTION:Leading by example\,   Pope Francis challenges both the scandal of poverty and the scandal of separating faith from daily life. So often his mode of engagement is dialogue\, an admirable and challenging approach rooted in encounter. His witness at the margins draws attention to the need for both social justice and personal conversion as expressions of faith. \nAngela Senander is an associate professor of theology at the University of St. Thomas (MN) and a research fellow at Georgetown University’s Berkley Center for Religion\, Peace and World Affairs. She completed her undergraduate work at the University of Notre Dame and her Ph.D. in Social Ethics at Boston College.  Her doctoral dissertation\, “Toward Liberation from Abortion: A Catholic Reflection on Abortion in the United States\,” was written under the direction of Lisa Sowle Cahill.
