PURPOSE

The St Anthony music ministry program has many volunteer musicians and cantors but is in a need of a piano player who would be able to accompany our choirs.

The purpose of this position is to provide piano accompaniment for scheduled Sunday 10:30am liturgies, in active support of increased communal participation.  While the pianist may sometimes be called upon to substitute at a different mass (8.30am), this would be for additional supplemental pay and only if the pianist is available and willing.

The ideal candidate will have a strong appreciation for collaboration, for working with students and professionals, and an openness to/enthusiasm for new music and new interpretations of known music, all for the purpose of uplifting the community in prayer and inviting them into communal song.

JOB DESCRIPTION

This position is defined as part time position. Expectation of attendance is for Sunday Morning Liturgies at St Anthony Parish and rehearsals with the music ensemble on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7pm – 8:00pm.

SKILLS NEEDED

  • Strong technical keyboard ability.
  • Ability to read music both from the grand staff and from a lead sheet.
  • Ability to sight-read.
  • Ability to take provide direction and work as a team member.

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Ability to improvise if a song requires an extension of time in support of the ritual action
  • Familiarity with the Catholic mass
  • Ability to sing (possibility that would be ideal but not required) while playing the piano.
  • Ability to announce songs to the congregation before beginning to play them.
  • Ability to voice an invitation to congregation to join music ensemble.
