Re: Appointment of Diocesan Chief Development Officer
Date: June 28, 2017
I am pleased to announce that Joseph Naylor will join the Diocese of San Jose as the Chief Development Officer (CDO) on July 24, 2017.
With Bill Matthews’ upcoming retirement this October, our consultation on his successor has helped to discern the need for a new position that integrates all diocesan stewardship, fundraising and development into a single office. The position of Chief Development Officer will provide forward-thinking leadership, strategic direction and coordination for all diocesan fundraising initiatives and stewardship, including the Annual Diocesan Appeal. The CDO will plan, develop, and implement a comprehensive development program to seek the financial resources and funding opportunities necessary to support and advance the Diocese’s pastoral programs and ministries and to assist parishes and schools with fundraising and stewardship.
Joe was born in Saint Louis, Missouri, and graduated from Saint Louis Preparatory Seminary South. He received his BA from Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri. After college, Joe moved to California where he worked with the YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles for 17 years, having been promoted to the position of Vice President for Endowment Development.
After his career with the YMCA, Joe moved to the healthcare field as the Senior Director of Gift Planning and Major Gifts working for UCLA – Los Angeles Orthopedic Hospital Foundation. He also served Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center Foundation as the Executive Director of the Foundation.
Joe has worked with the California Province and the Northeast Province of the Society of Jesus, currently serving as Vice President for Advancement and Communications for the Northeast Province of the Jesuits, headquartered in New York City. He is also the Chair of the US Jesuit Conference for Advancement Directors.
Over the years, he has served on the boards of the California YMCA Youth and Government, Saint Camillus Pastoral Center, Saint Matthew’s Parish, and the Brooklyn Jesuit Prep Nativity School.
We are delighted that Joe will join the Diocese of San Jose where we are confident he will enhance and grow stewardship across parishes, schools and other institutions.
