Youth Ministry Manager – Full Time – Chancery Office, San Jose

The Youth Ministry Manager is responsible for the comprehensive and holistic approach to youth ministry that recognizes the cultural, developmental, and spiritual diversity among Catholic adolescents and their families. The Manager is responsible for the implementation of the diocesan programs, initiatives, policies, and regulations related to youth ministry.
This is accomplished primarily through:
1. Advancing and advocating the goals and objectives of the US Bishops’ documents “Renewing the Vision” (youth).
2. Developing and equipping leaders who serve youth in the parishes and schools.
3. Providing support to pastors and their staffs in carrying out their responsibilities to meet the pastoral needs of youth and their parents through including implementation of the Diocese of San Jose Pastoral Plan.
4. Leading, initiating, facilitating, developing, and maintaining various diocesan programs in collaboration with other Directors in the Office for Evangelization.
The incumbent reports to the Senior Director of Evangelization.

Vision, Strategy and Leadership

  • Foster, strengthen, and support the adult leadership necessary for comprehensive and culturally appropriate youth ministry in diocesan, parish, school, and community settings, through training, formation, and resourcing.
  • Focuses primarily on middle school and high school youth ministry and youth Confirmation programs

Oversee diocesan programs that lead youth to deeper faith development:

  • Meet with leaders of diocesan youth programs to set direction and review the progress of those programs
  • Provide assistance on consultation, training, formation, and general support to parishes seeking to develop or enhance comprehensive youth ministry.
  • Provide support to English, Spanish and Vietnamese youth communities through parish youth ministry activities.
  • Connect with parish and school youth ministry coordinators on a one-on-one basis at least once a year to understand their ministry needs and concerns.
  • Coordinate, along with volunteer leadership team, multi-parish, multi-cultural events that may include Diocesan Youth Retreat and Middle School Youth Rally
  • Connects with pastors and principals on a one-on-one basis or at Deanery meetings at least once a year to discuss youth ministry needs, strengths and concerns at the parish

Finances and Operations:

  • Prepare annual youth ministry budget and monitors performance throughout fiscal year.
  • Organizes and conduct monthly meetings with Youth Ministry Directors, Confirmation Coordinators and school youth ministry leaders.
  • Develop policies for Youth Ministry and evaluate them to ensure effectiveness. Communicate policies to parishes and schools and assist in their implementation.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Network with other diocesan personnel to develop policy, share resources, and plan initiatives and programs that address the concerns and needs of young people and those who minister to them
  • Collaborate with other Directors and Associates in planning common projects such Youth Confirmation liturgies and implementing the Pastoral Plan Youth initiatives.
  • Approve and maintain appropriate web content for youth ministry on Diocesan public website.
  • Participate as an instructor for youth ministry units of programs in the Institute for Leadership in Ministry.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate diocesan delegations to national or international youth pilgrimages e.g. World Youth Day.
  • Collaborate with other dioceses in providing inter-diocesan events and trainings that may include On Fire NorCal Jam, Virtual Formation Nights, etc.
  • Serve as diocesan liaison in regional, national, and other youth organizations and attends regional and national conferences and meetings as applicable. Informs youth ministry leaders of developments in youth ministry.

Education and/or Experience:
 B.A. in Theology, Pastoral Ministry or related field; Master’s degree in religious education, theology, or pastoral ministry is preferred
 Understanding of current principles of youth
 Knowledge of major church documents related to youth ministry, evangelization, and catechesis
 4 to 5 years of full-time youth ministry and/or young adult ministry experience.

Language Skills:
Must be multilingual – English and Spanish is preferred. Strong verbal and written communication skills:

  • Proficient in composing reports, correspondence, and letters and in publishing newsletters and flyers.
  •  Able to develop and facilitate workshops, training, and presentations.
  • Able to read and understand Church documents, guidelines, and professional journals.
  • Able to understand and explain policies and answer questions.
  • Able to write presentations and effectively present information and respond to questions from groups and individuals in multicultural diocesan, school and parish settings.

Leadership Skills: Able to work effectively with multi-cultural schools and parishes. Strong ability to provide direction, inspiration, communication, and guidance. Exhibit confidence and commitment.

Computational Skills: Able to read and manage budget and contribute to building an office budget. Able to use external and internal websites and edit as appropriate.

Reasoning Ability: Able to solve problems, make sound decisions and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where varying degrees of standardization exist.

Technical Skills: Proficient Microsoft Office and working knowledge of internet applications and social media platforms.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid driver’s license.

Physical Demands:
While performing duties of this job, the employee must be able to transport materials and equipment (up to 30 pounds) to and from various locations. The employee is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, use hands in repetitive motion tasks, handle objects, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee must also be able to transport and set up items at an off-site location for presentations and events.

Physical Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work in an individual open cubicle. The space is wheelchair accessible. Some work may be performed in various parish locations, including churches, halls, and classrooms. Noise level and accommodations will vary.

Working Conditions:
The employee is required to be physically present in the office in order to complete office tasks when necessary and be out in the field supporting local parishes as needed. The employee needs to be available to work outside regular business hours as required and check in with and provide calendar to director. The employee must be able to multi-task and work cooperatively, negotiate, communicate, and collaborate with other members of the staff, youth leaders, youth ministers and clients of various cultures, personalities and spiritualities.
Other Requirements: The employee must demonstrate a history of effective leadership, good judgment, initiative, confidentiality, and discretion. Must be a practicing Roman Catholic. Must have knowledge of youth/young adult culture and current trends and issues within those cultures.

• Proven leadership ability with community, religious, social and professional organizations.
• Familiarity with Santa Clara County, and the roles and responsibilities of parishes and in the U.S.
• An eagerness to collaborate with colleagues.
• Ability to build professional trust, partner with stakeholders, and lead collaboration within and among parishes.
• Ability and willingness to operate within a complex, culturally and economically diverse environment, including a multicultural work force.

Salary: $75,000-95,000 per year base on education and experience.
