SUMMARY:Special Prayer Service for Victims/Survivors of Violence
DESCRIPTION:Violence hits all communities\, all income and age groups\, and it also tests our faith. We have a responsibility to respond. Please help us reach out to those individuals and families who have experienced the pain and hurt of losing a loved one through a violent act.  The Catholic community cannot ignore the moral and human costs of so much violence in our midst. \n      Bishop Patrick J. McGrath will be the presider.  \nThis will be a way for all who have been touched by violence to gather in prayer and remembrance. \nIf you park at San Pedro Square in the lot next to the Sonoma Chicken Coop at 45 Market Street\, we will validate your parking ticket and you will have two hours of free parking provided the Sharks are not in town that night. \nIf you would like a specific victim/survivor of violence to be remembered by name in this liturgical service\, please send the name before September 10\, 2015 to  Sister Maryann Cantlon at mcantlon@dsj.org or (408) 983-0131. All are invited to the reception after the prayer service.

SUMMARY:Ethics in Journalism: Reporting on Human Trafficking
DESCRIPTION:  Join Martha Mendoza\, a Pulitzer-Prize winning AP reporter\, for a discussion on the ethical issues that arise when reporting on human trafficking. \nMendoza will share experiences from her widely praised reporting on modern slavery on fishing vessels and in slavery hotspots\, such as Malaysia and Thailand. Connect with leading anti-slavery organizations\, including Polaris\, Free the Slaves\, Walk Free\, GoodWeave\, CIW\, the South Bay Coalition to End Human Trafficking\, and others as they explore questions such as how does a reporter navigate publishing a story on slaves while the slaves are still being held captive? Or should an expose on a company’s supply chain go to print despite concerns that it could impede progress? \nThese questions and more will be explored\, followed by an audience Q&A.Email katherine.carey@freetheslaves.net for more information. \nClick here to download the flyer to print and share with your contacts.

SUMMARY:Special Mass to those Affected By Hurricane Patricia
DESCRIPTION:As you know\, Hurricane Patricia is bearing down on the west coast of Mexico\, the strongest hurricane in history in the Western Hemisphere. I am asking for prayers for the people of Mexico.  Significant devastation is expected. \nExperts say that hundreds of thousands of people will be left homeless\, causing millions of dollars of damage. Many of the loved ones of those affected live here in our local communities. \nThere will be a special Mass this afternoon at 5:30 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish.  An all-night vigil will follow\, concluding with Mass at 7:00 am. \n We will continue to assess this situation\, together with Catholic Relief Services\, to determine the best way to offer our assistance to the people who will be affected by Patricia.  At the same time\, we are aware of the needs of the people of the Philippines following Typhoon Koppu\, known locally as Lando\, and will include these concerns in our plan of action. \nFor now\, you are invited to the Masses and Vigil at Our Lady of Guadalupe; but even more\, you are asked to keep these people in your prayers.  For further information\, contact Deacon Rubén Solorio in the Office of Social Ministry. \nSpecial Prayers: \nSurvivors of emergencies need your prayers.  Please join us as we pray for those affected by these latest emergencies in Mexico. \nOur Shelter\, Our Bulwark\, Our Highest Ground: For Those Threatened by Hurricane Patricia \nDownload English prayer \nNuestro refugio\, nuestro baluarte\, nuestro más alto sitio \nDownload Spanish prayer \nLinks to CRS. . . \nhttp://www.crs.org/?gclid=COeunfHK2cgCFc5efgodM4YChg  http://www.crs.org/stories/crs-plans-response-typhoon-koppu-philippines General links \ngeneral links:•    Here’s a link for an update: http://www.weather.com/storms/hurricane/news/hurricane-patricia-mexico-coast•    “Strongest Storm Ever Measured to Hit Mexico.” http://www.nbcnews.com/news/weather/hurricane-patricia-strongest-storm-ever-measured-hit-mexico-n449731
