Diocesan Youth Retreat (DYR)

DYR 2017

The Call

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?”
“Here I am,” I said; “send me!”

The Diocesan Youth Retreat (DYR) is an annual summer retreat hosted by the Diocese of San Jose’s Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministries. For five days, in the beautiful setting of South Lake Tahoe, teen (graduated 8th graders to graduated 12th graders) participants experience and encounter the love of God by means of Catholic catechesis, sacramental formation, social justice awareness, prayer experiences and significant opportunities to fellowship and create lasting friendships. The goal of the Diocesan Youth Retreat (DYR) is to gather and empower teen participants to live fully the gospel of Jesus Christ, develop their Catholic identity and instill a zeal for the New Evangelization. DYR also celebrates their call to greatness as teens are exhorted to use their God given gifts to spread the life and light of Christ to all they encounter.
Each day of the retreat has its own unique sub-theme, bible verse and formational content designed to stretch and inspire young people to see the value of faith in their daily lives. Attendees can look forward to Daily Mass, Eucharistic Adoration, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, daily workshops and small group dialogues to provide opportunities to encounter Christ and the beauty of the Catholic faith. Recreational times and activities are planned throughout the day(s) for teens to unwind and have an unforgettable time (e.g. the lake to swim, art activities, games, cheers, messy game, challenges, etc.). Although the application period has ended, we are still accepting late applications for consideration after initial applications have been completed. Leaders in training are those who are completing their college Freshmen to those who are 21 years of age. Please read the letter from our Director below:

We truly are grateful for your interest in being an LiT for DYR 2017. Young leaders are a blessing and serve to help bridge the gap between the old people leading this retreat and the teens they serve. But LiTs are much more than just that – LiTs are a vital part to evangelizing our young people. In light of this, please read the following with an open mind, as our expectations for LiTs have been raised.

Please be aware that submitting this form does not guarantee acceptance. There will be a discernment process where many factors will contribute to our decision. Also note that the process this year, as well as the role of LiTs will be different from previous years. Our reason is to be more intentional. The role of an LiT is the same as any other leader – to be an example of the Catholic faith. The only difference is that LiTs are given more guidance.

Please also note that if at any point between your potential acceptance and DYR 2017 we believe that you are not yet ready to be a leader on this retreat, we may rescind our acceptance. Our service for DYR is to the teens, not the leaders – and that includes LiTs.

Along with your application, a letter of recommendation is required. This should be from either a leader/coordinator or priest from the parish or organization who you’ve been volunteering/working with this year. We will not accept a letter from the youth minister at your youth group/home parish unless: you are currently living in the area and volunteering there still, you’ve come back to volunteer for certain events (like retreats), or you volunteer the few times that you do come home. We want to know what you are currently doing to live out your Catholic faith. It doesn’t necessarily need to be youth ministry related (and in certain cases faith related). The letter of recommendation should be emailed directly from the person writing it to me at deepuk@dsj.org

You should hear back from us by the end of March if not sooner. Please be aware that there are meetings that LiTs are expected to attend and participate in prior to DYR. This will include trainings (for LiTs and Staff), as well as packing/administration day. Those dates will be shared with those who’ve been accepted, if not sooner.

To apply:

1) Fill out the application form here

2) Pray if God is calling you to be an LiT at DYR this year. You may want to but God may be calling you elsewhere. You may not want to but God may be calling you to this. If you are called, continue to the next steps. If not, please keep the team in your prayers that we make decisions based on God’s desires and not our own.

3) Forward the Letter of Recommendation Form to the person of your choice (this should be someone you are currently volunteering/working/serving with).

Everything should be done and turned in by April 1st.
