Who can apply?
Any adult in the Diocese of San Jose, age 21 and up.
How will people be chosen?
There is a form to fill out indicating your interest. People will be selected based upon a first come first serve basis.
What are the deadlines for submitting applications?
There is no deadline for submitting applications. When the spaces are filled. There are a minimum of 6 spots available.
When will the participants be chosen?
Upon indicating interest in this trip, you will be notified to turn in a deposit to guarantee your spot. You will be notified of acceptance within a week of receiving your application.

What will be my commitment if I am selected?
- You will be expected to turn in a non-refundable deposit ($100) to hold your spot. The acceptance materials will outline the payment schedule and due dates.
- You will be invited to attend one or two preparatory meetings for the trip, to be held in the Spring of 2007.
- You will turn in all paperwork and make payments toward the trip according to schedule.
Young Adult Immersion Trip to the White Mountain Apache Reservation
July 8th - 15th, 2007
Cost: $750 (depends on number of participants and airfare)
Includes airfare, car rental, housing and fees. Food is not included.
Participants will fly to Phoenix, Arizona and visit the Heard Museum located in Phoenix. The Heard museum is famous for it’s exhibitions of the Southwest. Sunday evening the group will arrive at the White Mountain Apache Reservation, about 3 hours northeast of Phoenix. The group will stay at St. Francis Church, in Whiteriver on the Apache Reservation.
For two or three days we will be doing volunteer work on the reservation and visiting the historic Fort Apache compound including the Apache Cultural Center. Fr. Eddie Fronske, OFM will be our host and will facilitate our interaction with the Apaches and will conduct mini-workshops about life on the reservation.
The group will also travel to northern Arizona, to Canyon de Chelly located on the Navajo Reservation. There will be an opportunity to walk into the canyon (60 minutes round trip) and see an ancient cliff dwelling. We will spend one or two nights at Canyon de Chelly. On the second day, the group will drive to Chaco Canyon in northern New Mexico. This excursion will take the entire day and you will see many ancient archeological sites. For the two nights spent at Canyon de Chelly the group will stay in a motel and share a room with one other person.
The group will return to the White Mountain Reservation and tentatively attend a Sunrise Ceremony (Apache puberty rite) on Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday morning.
The Sunday before departure the group will attend an inculturated Eucharistic celebration on the Reservation.
Additional Information
Some of the places we will visit will require you to do some light hiking. At times, the temperature can get quite hot.
The volunteer work may range from working with children, to painting, yard work or even general clean up.
The altitude of the Whiteriver Apache Reservation is approximately 5000 feet above sea level; it is considered the high desert.
Please keep these in mind.

Youth Immersion Programs General Information
Who can apply?
Only current Sophomores thru Seniors in High School may apply for Mexico, and
Frosh thru Senior who will be at least 15 by the time of the trip for the San Jose Urban Plunge.
How will people be chosen?
The adults supervising the trips will review the applications. The criteria for selecting participants will take into consideration the timeliness of submitting the application, the essay explaining your reasons for wanting to participate, balancing of males and females and the recommendation form.

Youth Immersion Trip to Tijuana, Mexico
July 23rd -27th, 2007
Cost: $575. Includes airfare, housing and food.
Students will do demanding physical labor involving mixing cement by hand, painting, digging, and other construction type work. There will be interaction with community members who work along side U.S. participants. Some Spanish is helpful but not required. Cultural activities will also be provided.
This trip is a partnership between the Diocese of San Jose and the Shinnyo-en Buddhist Temple. Participants from both groups will be involved in inter-religious dialogue in addition to performing meaningful service side-by-side in Mexico.
July 16-20, 2007
Cost: $100-150. Includes all program costs.
Students will be involved in assisting Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County with various programs including serving meals at homeless shelters and working with low-income children. This program takes an in-depth look at poverty in our local community. You will provide direct assistance to the needy, learn why people are poor and learn about Catholic teachings about social justice.
