Gospel: Luke 6:12–19

As darkness descends on our nation today, we sense an inner darkness of the heart. Each of us has had a growing sense of anxiety at the increase of terrorism in recent times. But the outrageous barbarity of this morning’s terrorist attacks on our nation has utterly stunned us. And the darkness deepens-we are still in the eye of the storm!

What should be our reaction? It is a time of many reactions and mixed emotions. It is a time of great sorrow, loss, fear, and yes, the very human reaction of anger.

I believe, however, that today, above all, should be a time for prayer—that prayer that the Gospel today calls us to. We pray for those who have died-may the Lord receive them to himself.

Our hearts and prayers go out to those who are injured, and we express our great compassion to all of their families and friends.

And we give thanks to God for those who were spared. We pray for all of us who have been indelibly marked by this catastrophic tragedy. Today is, above all, a day of prayer.

As we continue this service of thanksgiving to God, even in this very dark hour, let us praise our God who is love, and give God thanks for that love which today alone sustains us.
