Each parish community is part of the beautiful mosaic that is the face of the Diocese of San Jose. We are young and old; we come from the east and the west, from north and south; we have different opinions, different visions, different ways of speaking, but we are one in the Lord. Together in Christ, may we continue to build up His body so that, rooted in faith we may, as one people, embrace a future that is full of joy and hope.
On the occasion of the Twenty-Fifth Anniversary of the Diocese of San Jose, Bishop Patrick J. McGrath has given to the Diocese a great Jubilee Cross and to each parish and mission a smaller cross to commemorate in perpetuity this Jubilee Year. This Jubilee Cross is a processional cross that has been fabricated by Martin Marklin of Marklin Candle Design. It will travel in pilgrimage to the 52 parishes and missions of the Diocese during the Jubilee Year to be present at each parish’s special liturgical celebration of the Jubilee. As part of the Entrance Rite of those liturgies, the bishop will take from each parish’s cross the “tessera,” or mosaic tile, on which is inscribed the name of the parish and place this tile on the back side of the Jubilee Cross.
When it is completed, the Cross will be a representation of the Diocese of San Jose at this particular time in its history. Just as the Diocese, the People of God who make up our parishes and missions, is incomplete without the presence and participation of each person, so the Cross will not be complete until the tesserae from every parish and mission has been incorporated into the Jubilee Cross.
